We Moved!

Fossa Studio Photography moved from Spokane, Washington, to Glen Burnie, Maryland!

Yes, that is right!  All the way across the country.  We have taken the last two years off to focus on several life changing events.  I finished my second college degree then followed my fiance to Maryland where we got married and had a bouncing baby boy last year.

Fossa Studio Photography has moved away from event photography and I am finally pursuing my true passion in newborn and children photography.  Thank you for sticking with me after all this time in hiatus and I look forward to sharing many new images and adventures with you all.

Here is a photo of my new husband and son Bryan and Reilly!

From saving lives to boutique photography: One veteran's journey - by Jan Fletcher

“We were stacking them up like sardines,” says Veronica Evans, recounting her experience working as a medical tech at Andrews Air Force Base several years ago. Andrews Air Force Base is an air medical staging facility that receives wounded service personnel from combat zones overseas.

“It was the first time they were touching soil in the U.S., and some were really in bad shape — critical care with up to 300 pounds of life-support gear,” says Evans. “Sometimes all we could do was clean them up so the family could say goodbye while they were still warm and breathing. That’s what we would do for the families.”

The wounded arrived in litters tightly packed onboard evacuation aircraft. Evans, trained to do amputations, tracheotomies, and other procedures that her civilian counterparts would never be allowed to practice in civilian medical facilities, found the work rewarding and emotionally draining at the same time.

According to the U.S. Air Force official photo media website, vibration and cramped conditions aboard evacuation aircraft can make a painful injury excruciating, and some injured military members have even posted signs: “Don’t bump the stump.”

Faced with such suffering, Evans says, “I’d just walk out with tears streaming down my face. You feel lower than dirt. You didn’t do anything,” she says, comparing her service to that of men and women whose bodies had been mangled by war.

In June 2007, Evans left military service and went to work in the emergency room for Deaconess Hospital in Spokane. The stark transition to civilian life was difficult, she says.

“As a medical tech, I went from a huge scope of practice to sweeping floors and wiping butts,” she says. “To go from so much responsibility – it just doesn’t translate to the civilian world. They don’t understand your capabilities.”

Feeling frustration with the state of her career, she decided to go on a leap of faith, entering into a new career: photography. After researching it thoroughly, she arranged for aptitude testing, and the results surprised her. “Wow, you’re made for this,” the tester told her.

In the spring of 2008, Evans began a two-year degree program at Spokane Falls Community College in photography. She graduated June 10, 2010.

“I really thought I had made a mistake in the first class,” she says. “They were talking a whole different language, but I listened a lot.”

When she heard her instructor speak about the frustrations of newly launched photographers, she took an important lesson to heart. “Some grads don’t make it,” she remembers him saying. “They don’t have a name I recognize — they don’t have a studio.” So, she asked herself, “How can I prevent that from happening to me?”

While still in her first quarter of classes, she put together her business plan. “The next quarter, I started working on my logo,” she says, which is based on the design for a hair jewel.

“I didn’t want to use my name. I didn’t want something that would lock me into something stale that everyone else had,” says Evans. “I loved Mufasa from The Lion King. Everybody loves Mufasa. I can sell the name — sell the quirkiness. So, in my second quarter, there was Fossa Studio.”

Her studio is located in the Wetzel Building in the “SoDo” district of Spokane, southeast of the downtown core. As she shows off her newly acquired fabric backdrops, she says her vision for her business is to develop it into a boutique photography studio. She says she aims to be “an outstanding photographer.”

“When I quit nursing, some of the nurses said to me, ‘I wish I could quit, too,’” says Evans. “I told them, ‘Why don’t you?’

“I jump and I don’t look before I do,” she says. “It’s not always easy, but it works out. I do a lot of praying. Right now I’m still in the phase of building social capital, and I’m doing a lot of community events,” says Evans.

“I have a passion for in-studio photography – pet photography – weddings – all that. I question how hard it is at times. But, it has made me a very strong, well-rounded person.”

As she watches a freight train trundle past the Wetzel building, from the building’s balcony, she says, “Why do something if you don’t know how to do it well?”

India Sari

Fossa Studio India Sari Shoot, Model Julia Schurkamp. Location Courtesy Magnuson Hotels Properties! Thank you for your hospitality! Hair and Make Up Artist by Cassandra Carlson of SCC: You out did yourself and helped make my vision a reality!
After a grueling 3 hours of hair and makeup, countless bindi beads popping off no matter how much eyelash glue was applied, we finally got Julia dressed, and reinforced with safety pins and to our location site: Magnuson Hotels Properties.

The light was fading fast but the location lights worked to give the look I was going for. The wind even cooperated and gave movement in the sari. People were hooping and hollering giving congratulations to "the bride". It was hard for her to keep a straight face so the bindi would stay put.

Here is a closeup shot to highlight the makeup and bindi work. Just a note, eyelash glue works great most of the time, but spirit gum is more of a work horse in a situation like this.

~ Tiny Dancer ~

This is the finished product from my Tiny Dancers Limited Edition Series that I will be offering through my studio. I had a trial run with three adorable little ballet dancers. I had interviews with parents and the children as I could not photograph every child from the class.

It was tremendous work and I was thankful that I already had client intake forms and folders ready to keep appointments and phone calls sorted. There were costume fittings, phone calls galore, emails, prop shopping, and I made three separate princess garlands with flowers and about 60 yards of ribbon on them total!

The mothers were concerned that the girls would be too nervous to "perform" but I assured them that it was the experience that I wanted them to have. The photographs were second.
Oh, we had a grand time! The girls and the mother's were able to relax right away as soon as they saw the tons of flowers and goodies lying around. I joked with them about goofy stories then I got serious about the fairies that live among the flowers. They listened intently for the tiny bells that signal they are flying around and they swore they saw them peeking around the corners of things!

I got calls afterward from the parents telling me that the girls did not want to leave and can't wait to come back. They enjoyed their session so much I even got hugs! Oh the feeling is priceless! I get to give that back with forever memories like this for the family and the child to enjoy for years and years to come!

The tri-photo I designed with patterns, overlays, brushes, text, and stroke styles.

Puppy Portraits!

I am offering Pet Portrait Sessions and I need to build my portfolio up in this area. This is my first shoot in this specialty and though it was extremely challenging it was so much fun!

This is Taz! He is a 3 month old pitbull puppy rescued from the Humane Society! His new parents are so lucky to have him! He loves rubber duckies and exploring!

Taz kept running around everywhere trying to explore everything at once and getting him to sit down and look at the camera was near impossible. Treats, a squeaky rubber duck, and a long walk to tire him out mid session worked wonders!

Urban Dance Ballet: Marta

THE PREPARATION

This shoot was many hours in the making. I made so many phone calls, went out scouting for locations, purchased props like the dress and rainbow legwarmers in the shots below, met the parents and Jonna - the ballet studio owner where I found my ballet stars, and of course getting props.
I had been putting off getting the rest of my location kit and ordered it for this and the following outdoor shoots. My portable battery is specially made for up to 6 of my lights and the wireless flash remotes (like pocket wizards but sooo much cheaper) worked like a charm! I was able to walk way down the walkway and the lights still were set off.

THE SHOOT

This shoot was completed in studio and downtown over a period of two days. It was EXACTLY what I envisioned in my proposal and is a gem! Marta used the stairs and set like a professional model and just had a blast. Her parents both were with me and helped me haul the gear and hold the stands. That was a God-send because the wind was blowing so hard the huge soft box almost took my daughter (assistant for the day) away!

Note to self: Bring latex gloves, baby wipes and hand sanitizer to move nasty rugs of unknown toxic filth away from the tiny alley.

This pose Marta came up with because the walls were so close together. I had her mom spot her until she got into the right position then rush out of the shot. Her ballet instructor is very happy with this shot and says "this captures the essence of Marta"

What a joy to not only have such a beautiful senior to be but also one so flexible and willing to try difficult poses then be able to make them look so easy! Wow, what a shoot!

This shot was in studio and we incorporated elements of the traditional ballet tutu and pointe shoes along with a more edgy fashion corset and scarf. The pose is modern dance influence as Marta is also taking classes for this. I had this idea as soon as I found the corset and it came out better than I hoped.

(The flooring is made up of 3 panels of 4x8 white sheets you can get at Lowes for about $12 each)

English Vintage

English Vintage

This was my first shoot using my new overhead rails installed in my portrait studio!

This little guy is Lock and he fit the part of my English Vintage set to the T! His momma went and got him some newsboy hats to match the set when I described it to her earlier during the phone consult.
I also let her know that my studio is mainly shoe free for little ones under the age of 5. Little man here promptly sat down after shaking my hand ever so politely and wasted no time taking off his socks and shoes!

Lock was so adorable and very interested in getting his "pitcher" taken! I showed him how the flash worked and at first he was startled but I assured him it would not hurt him. He kept looking around in the most apt wonder at all the props I had piled up "just in case".

Turns out, Lock lost all interest in anyone or anything but the truck the instant he laid his eyes on it. He was still very polite and interactive and cute as a button, but this was the hands down winner of props today!

So, what do you do when you introduce that really awesome toy/prop too early? You improvise and hide easter eggs (not real, because if you don't find them later it will be a disaster), and ask them to find them.
I try to ask their parents if they are allergic to anything or if they have a favorite goodie like raisins or candy I can hide away in tutu's or the suitcase in this situation. Capturing great moments are easy when they are searching for that treasure!

Lock is at one of my favorite ages; he will be three next week. He is not shy and can verbalize and interact. Here he is telling me about all "five" toes he has! ha ha I love my job!

The Waiting by Veronica Evans

A hush has fallen
in the early morning hours

A silence grows louder
and dewdrops sparkle hopefully

The soft mist swirls quietly
in a playful dance

Slowly, waiting cautiously
for morning sunshine rays

to pierce their slumber
they welcome a new day

My Spokane

So, I was assigned a project for documentary video that was a video postcard of what I see is my Spokane. I choose the place of my studio and wanted to showcase why I love this location so much. Like, me, there is more to see if you only look closer. The polish is there, but hidden under many layers. This is a video of my Spokane.
